The Invisible Walls We Build Around Ourselves

Angel referred to this as the process of “stepping over the wall.” When we look over these walls, we begin to see that the world is much bigger than we ever realized, and we have more power than we think to create the changes we want in our lives. But in order to do so, we first need to be aware of the beliefs and behaviors that have been programmed into us, many of which we may have learned unconsciously at a very young age. This is where tools like NLP, coaching, and hypnotherapy can come in handy.

NLP, in particular, helps people to recognize and shift limiting beliefs and behaviors that no longer serve them. By addressing the root cause of these patterns, individuals can experience profound transformation and break free from cycles that keep them stuck. Whether it’s through coaching or hypnotherapy, the goal is the same—to give you the tools to look beyond your self-imposed boundaries and step into your full potential.

The Struggle of Suppressed Emotions
Another key point in our conversation with Angel was the topic of emotions. We often don’t realize the impact that suppressed emotions have on our bodies and our well-being. As children, we’re naturally expressive. When we’re upset, we cry, throw tantrums, or express our anger freely. These emotional outbursts are normal and healthy, but as we grow older, we’re taught to suppress our emotions, especially in public settings. We learn that it’s not okay to be angry, sad, or scared, so we bottle these emotions up and hide them away.

However, as both Angel and Angela Bennett (our host) pointed out, emotions that are suppressed can have serious consequences on our mental and physical health. Repressed emotions can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and even physical illness. When we try to ignore or push down our emotions, they don’t simply disappear—they stay in our bodies, causing tension, discomfort, and even disease. Angel explained that when we are able to acknowledge and express our emotions in healthy ways, we not only release the emotional buildup but also prevent these negative feelings from festering and affecting our health.

A significant part of emotional healing comes from giving ourselves permission to feel. Emotions like anger, fear, sadness, and even joy are natural and part of the human experience. The key, according to Angel, is to allow ourselves to feel these emotions without letting them consume us or define us. NLP and coaching offer practical techniques to help people process their emotions in real-time, rather than letting them spiral out of control or linger in the background.

Shifting Your Emotional State with Self-Awareness
A big takeaway from this conversation was the importance of self-awareness in managing our emotions. When we become aware of our emotional states, we gain the power to shift them. As Angel put it, “If you don’t know how to describe what you’re feeling, you don’t know how to address it.” If we simply say “I feel crap,” it’s hard to know what to do next. But when we can identify our emotions specifically—whether it’s fear, sadness, or overwhelm—we can take intentional steps to address them.

This is where the power of NLP comes into play. NLP tools and techniques help us interrupt negative emotional patterns and replace them with healthier, more positive emotions. When we understand the triggers and patterns behind our emotions, we can make a conscious choice to change our state. It’s like hitting a “pause” button on our emotional response and choosing a more empowering feeling, such as confidence, happiness, or gratitude.

Angel shared a fascinating insight based on neuroscience, revealing that when we experience intense emotions like anger or stress, our bodies release chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline. These chemicals trigger the fight-or-flight response, which, over time, can weaken our immune system and make us more susceptible to illness. But by learning how to recognize and manage our emotions, we can stop this process in its tracks, prevent emotional overload, and protect our health.
